my mother paints. she sits and paints cheap thin rough wooden boards. in all colors of blues and orange pinks of the southwest. my mother paints where she wants to be.

my mother paints deserts. cactus flowers and bleached bones, far from the ones we found behind the trampoline.
my mother's desert isn't white. she doesn't squeal riding on corrugated cardboard down ivory dunes. her desert lacks nearby mountains where small children sink in the mud after the rains and great uncles serve cereal with goat milk.
her paints personify a desert alone.
a setting sun over a winding road, eternal coral streaming through the blue. day in and day out she paints a desert.
when she looks at me i see not my face but the adobe sands reflected in her eyes.
